Nurse-reported staffing guidelines and exclusive breast milk feeding.
A study examined relationships between nurse staffing levels, missed nursing care, and exclusive breast milk feeding rates during childbirth hospitalization. The research analyzed data from 184 hospitals across 29 states, involving 2,691 labor nurses. The investigation focused on compliance with Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses staffing guidelines and its impact on breastfeeding outcomes. The study evaluated how missed care activities, particularly skin-to-skin contact and early breastfeeding initiation, influenced exclusive breast milk feeding rates.

Missed nursing care during labor and birth and exclusive breast milk feeding during hospitalization for childbirth.
The purpose of this study was to determine associations between missed nursing care and nurse staffing during labor and birth, and exclusive breast milk feeding at hospital discharge. Exclusive breast milk feeding is a national quality indicator of inpatient maternity care. Nurses have substantial responsibility for direct support of infant feeding during the childbirth hospitalization. The investigators indicate that the results support exclusive breast milk feeding as a nurse-sensitive quality indicator.
